Incorrect ventilation of the drainage system within a building can cause positive and negative pressure effects within the system. The consequences of these effects are quite annoying and well known to all of us because they can still be easily found in many homes today. The first is an acoustic effect, the classic gurgling sound, audible when the water contained within the trap (the so-called water seal) undergoes an abrupt oscillatory movement due to the generation of air within the drainage system, thus causing suction. The second and more unpleasant effect is of a hygienic-sanitary nature. If the depression is quite significant, prolonged or repeated over time, the water level inside the trap drops so much as to allow the passage of malodorous fumes. This passage not only has an unpleasant effect on our sense of smell, but from a health point of view... it poses health risks by allowing bacteria to enter the living environment.
